President Obama has called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to congratulate him for his victory in a controversial election.

"Although the process was messy, I'm pleased to say the final outcome was determined in accordance with Afghan law," Obama said.

The runoff election was supposed to be held this weekend, but Karzai's top challenger, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, dropped out. He claimed the results would have been rigged, just like the original Aug. 20 election.
